Whitehorse is the capital of the Yukon Territory and is the largest city in Canada’s North. We’ve allowed a full day for you to enjoy the delights of Whitehorse. Discover a downtown that’s loaded with charisma – a captivating mix of coffee shops, museums and quirky heritage buildings. Enjoy public art, inspired cuisine, live performances and inviting cultural explorations. Stroll the Millennium Trail past the impressive Whitehorse dam and along the river to tour the historic S.S. Klondike sternwheeler. There are lots of activities to enjoy in and around Whitehorse.

Today you will visit the Yukon Wildlife Preserve, which is included in your fly drive. This is a unique wildlife viewing opportunity, which features ten species of northern Canadian mammals in their own natural environment. Encompassing over 700 acres with various natural habitats, the Yukon Wildlife Preserve offers unparalleled wildlife viewing and photo opportunities.

Accommodation

323 Miles / 520 Kilometres

Today you will leave Whitehorse and  head north on the Klondike Highway. Be sure to stop at the Braeburn Lodge for their incredible cinnamon buns! You’ll pass through Carmacks, where you may choose to take some time at the Tagé Cho Hudän Interpretive Centre, learning about the Northern Tutchone culture. Next on the agenda is Five Finger Rapids, where many make the short hike down to the rapids. It will be evening before you arrive into Dawson City, but you will have had an incredibly scenic drive following the route of the intrepid gold seekers. Dawson City is an authentic gold rush town, bursting with historic sites and fascinating attractions. The Dawson City Museum is a great place to begin your exploration of Dawson, the gold rush, and Yukon’s First People.

Today you will have a further full day to visit the various historical sights of Dawson City: SS Keno – the last steamer to run the Yukon River from Whitehorse, the Jack London Interpretive Center with the poet’s original cabin, the city museum, the Grand Palace Theatre – home of the “Gaslight Follies Show” and Diamond Tooth Gertie’s Casino with legal gambling tables and “Can-Can” floor shows. Do not miss the short drive on Ridge Road to the top of the Midnight Dome with excellent views over Dawson, the Ogilvie Mountains, and the Yukon and Klondike Rivers.

Today you will join the Dempster Highway and travel through the spectacular subarctic wilderness of Tombstone Provincial Park. It is worth setting off early so you can enjoy some time in the park en route. Next, it is on to Eagle Plains, fringed by the Ogilvie and Richardson Mountain ranges – truly awe-inspiring. Your accommodation is at the remote Eagle Plains Hotel, located just 35kms south of the Arctic Circle.

226 Miles / 364 Kilometres

Continue north today, crossing the Arctic Circle and passing through the Richardson Mountains – you are leaving Yukon and entering Northwest Territories. You may wish to take a short detour to Fort McPherson before reaching the end of the Dempster Highway and arriving in Inuvik. This remote location, which is actually the third largest community in Northwest Territories, will be home for the next two nights. During your stay you’ll be drawn to explore this remote Arctic settlement and its surroundings and the Western Arctic Regional Visitors Centre is a great place to start. There are also day tours available to Tuktoyaktuk and Herschel Island, plus the option to take a sightseeing flight over the Arctic Ocean, for a literal birds-eye view.

226 Miles / 364 Kilometres

After saying goodbye to Inuvik, you will start your journey back south to Dawson City, re-tracing your steps along the Dempster Highway. We have included another night in Eagle Plains, to help you rest and recharge.

254 Miles / 409 Kilometres

Continuing to re-trace your stpes, your journey south continues as far as Dawson City, where you will spend a further night exploring this wonderful city. If you didnt have an opportunity on your way north, make sure you take time to explore Tombstone Territorial Park on this return leg. The park protects a unique wilderness of rugged peaks, permafrost landforms, and abundant wildlife, all reflected in a rich First Nations culture. We recommend choosing one of our  Tombstone Park guided tours, so you don’t miss a thing.

Today you will drive the Klondike Highway east towards Whitehorse accompanied by a scenic mountain landscape, with a little detour and an overnight stay in Mayo. At Stewart Crossing, you’ll turn onto the infamous Silver Trail Highway. The area around Mayo was once the richest silver mining area in Canada. Mayo is a hub for fly-in fishing, rafting excursions, and other exciting outdoor adventures, or for something a little bit more laid back, the Binet House Museum displays exhibits on the area’s history, intriguing artifacts, and a 3D map of the surrounding landscape. If time allows, or you wish to add a further night to this itinerary, you could visit Keno City. It would allow you to visit Keno City Mining Museum & Alpine Interpretive Centre, take a stroll around town to view its impressive historic buildings and drive up Signpost Road to Keno Hill. There are old mining structures along the way and an amazing viewpoint.

Today, you make the last of your drives south, back to where it all started in Whitehorse. If you didnt manage it earlier in the itinerary, be sure to stop at the Five Finger Rapids and hike down to the shore of the Yukon River, for some incredible photo opportunities.
