Mississippi, whose name comes from several American Indian words meaning “Father of Waters,” is bordered by the legendary Mississippi River and is rich in beauty, history, and tradition, letting visitors relive the grandeur of the Old South. The state is also home to the Natchez Trace Parkway, a scenic highway over 8,000 years old. Tucked between Alabama, Louisiana, and Tennessee, with a small stretch of Gulf Coast to the south, Mississippi offers a true taste of the American Deep South.

The capital city, Jackson, caters to city lovers, while outdoor enthusiasts can explore six national forests with opportunities for hunting, fishing, hiking, cycling, and boating. Golf on the Mississippi Gulf Coast is increasingly regarded as among the nation’s best, with courses including Fallen Oak, The Preserve, Shell Landing, Great Southern, Grand Bear, and The Bridges. A short drive from these attractions, visitors can enjoy the white sandy beaches of Biloxi and Gulfport, where bright lights, pulsing casinos, and lively clubs create a vibrant coastal atmosphere.

Natural Beauty & Rich History

The 'Magnolia State' has plenty of scenic beauty, and rich history, particularly associated with the Native American tribes that pre-dated European occupation and the battles of the American Civil War. The state also has more than its fair share of architectural treasures, particularly the huge concentration of magnificent antebellum mansions in Natchez.

Culturally the state has generated a wealth of talent, spawning such greats as Tennessee Williams, Elvis Presley, Jimmy Rodgers and B B King, not to mention the Blues, the music style that was born in the cotton fields of the Mississippi Delta. Mississippi’s literary town of Oxford was home to writer William Faulkner and suspense novelist John Grisham. Award-winning authors Richard Wright and Eudora Welty also used Mississippi as the base for their work and playwright Tennessee Williams and puppet master Jim Henson honed their creativity in the state.

Culinary Heritage

Food and drink are at the core of Mississippi culture and history. There’s a saying around the state: “Food brings people together at the community table.” The locals find great joy in sharing the Mississippi story through the heirloom recipes, family-owned restaurants and farm-to-table menus full of the most celebrated dishes. Whether you’re seeking authentic Delta-style hot tamales, an upscale twist on Southern cuisine, or a sampling of Mississippi craft brews or a sip of sweet tea, the next meal always holds something special for you.

Mississippi cuisine defies categorization. And, in some cases, it defies imagination. From catfish to comeback sauce, from tamales to traditional Southern sweets, from shrimp to slug burgers to sweet potatoes, Mississippi's culinary heritage has food to please every palate. This state is home to James Beard award-winning chefs and noted national food writers, as well as some of the best home cooks and out-of-the-way diners to be found anywhere.

Sports & Outdoors

Ideal weather. Varied terrain. A love for the outdoors that is shared by visitors and locals alike. Is it any wonder that Mississippi is a popular destination for golf and sports enthusiasts? Home to two annual PGA TOUR events: The Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic of the PGA Champions Tour, played at Fallen Oak in March; and the Sanderson Farms Championship of the PGA TOUR, played at the Country Club of Jackson in November.

Thanks to the temperate climate and wealth of waterways and wilderness, Mississippi is the perfect place to appreciate the great outdoors. With fishing, hunting, camping, canoeing, cycling, kayaking and more, it’s easy to see why Mississippi attracts sports and outdoor enthusiasts from across the country and around the world. During your stay, you can enjoy your favourite activities, from paddling a scenic stream to touring a working farm, to fishing on the scenic Gulf Coast. There's no limit to the outdoor activities that you can do in Mississippi.
