Music & the Great Outdoors

Music is the lifeblood and heartbeat of Louisiana, and it can be heard throughout the cities and towns, in cafés, bars, clubs and restaurants. Louisiana was the birthplace of Jazz, as well as many other distinct musical styles, including Cajun and Gospel. The legacy of native Louisianans includes world famous entertainers such as Louis Armstrong, Harry Connick, Jr., Jerry Lee Lewis, Fats Domino, Britney Spears, and Wynton Marsalis. Your ears will be pleasantly surprised by the diversity of music on offer within the state.

For those that enjoy the great outdoors, Louisiana offers coastal marshes, bayous and rolling hills and lakes in the north and south. It’s an ideal destination for activity holidays including fishing, cycling, golf, hiking and kayaking. Take a trip into the swampy mysterious bayous draped with Spanish moss and see if you can spot an alligator or two!

Food & Festivals

From the world class music to the spirited fairs and festivals, Louisiana has something for everyone. With more than 600 fairs and festivals, the cultural calendar is packed with exciting celebrations and there is sure to be something going on, whenever you choose to visit. The fabulous cuisine is an exquisite fusion of tastes from a diverse list of cultures. Louisianans cook from the heart - and create with their soul. This is obvious whether you are eating a sandwich in a café or a 5 course meal in a world-renowned restaurant. The very first cocktail was created in New Orleans, which is reflective of the carefree, party attitude. Sample a “Hurricane” cocktail at one of the many 24-hour bars!

History & Heritage

One facet of Louisiana that makes it such an appealing destination is its deep and colourful history. European explorers found their way to the region and inhabited the area very early relative to settlement of much of the rest of the continent. As a result, some communities in Louisiana are among the oldest in the United States. Before those explorers arrived, of course, people we now know as Native Americans populated the region.

Reaching still farther back in time, ancient peoples left their mark on the area thousands of years ago. The state of Louisiana offers many ways to explore the region’s rich history, in hundreds of museums, historic structures, landmarks, artefacts and works of art. The careful preservation and restoration of these sites and artefacts has created many rare opportunities for visitors to experience Louisiana’s history and gain insights into the diverse cultures that continue to influence the state today.

New Orleans and Beyond

The colourful city of New Orleans overflows with history, culture, and an energy felt on every street. Families will find endless experiences, from paddlewheel steamers and streetcar rides to the Aquarium, Audubon Zoo, Voodoo Museum, and Mardi Gras World. Add airboat swamp tours, French Quarter people-watching, Bourbon Street nightlife, and the National D-Day Museum, and there’s more than enough to fill any visit.

Beyond the city, Louisiana offers even more to explore, from the vibrant Shreveport-Bossier area and the historic town of Natchitoches to Baton Rouge’s Art Deco State Capitol. The state is rich in majestic antebellum homes, particularly along the River Road between New Orleans and Natchez, each telling stories of the families and enslaved people who once lived there. In Lafayette you can dance the two-step, while the Creole Nature Trail near Lake Charles reveals Louisiana’s wild and beautiful landscapes.
