Rich in history

Alabama is a state rich in history and is probably best known for its key role in two of the most momentous events in US history, the American Civil War and the Civil Rights Movement. In 1861, Southern politicians gathered at the State Capitol in Montgomery and formed the Confederate States of America with Montgomery as its first Capital. The telegram that started the Civil War was sent from here. Three years later in 1864, Mobile Bay in the south of the state was also the scene of an important naval struggle when the outnumbered Confederate fleet surrendered. Alabama was also under the World’s spotlight from 1955 to 1968 when the Civil Rights Movement gathered pace under the leadership of Dr Martin Luther King. Museums, bridges, churches and historic sites chronicle key episodes of this movement throughout the State. The Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail, the Rosa Parks Museum and Civil Rights Memorial Center in Montgomery and the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute are just some of the must-see museums and landmarks.

Alabama's music & festivals

Juke joints, hangouts, and honkytonks capture the spirit of the Deep South, and Alabama is full of quirky venues where locals share their passion for music. The state has a rich musical heritage and is the birthplace of legends like W.C. Handy, Nat King Cole, and Hank Williams.

In the north-western Shoals region along the Tennessee River, visitors can tour music studios where stars like Aretha Franklin, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and the Rolling Stones recorded in the 1960s and ’70s. This heritage is celebrated state-wide through annual festivals, including Mobile’s Mardi Gras, America’s first, dating back to 1703. Today, the streets of downtown Mobile come alive with marching bands, colourful floats, and the sights and sounds of a truly unforgettable celebration.

Golfing in Alabama

Alabama is a top golfing destination in the U.S., with championship-standard courses across the state. From the fast greens along the Gulf Coast sand dunes to dogleg fairways surrounded by dogwoods and magnolias in the north, golfers of all levels will find a challenge and a beautiful setting.

The Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail, with 468 holes across 11 sites, has been named the “Number One Golf Value in America” by Golf Digest. Three of its courses are ranked among the top 50 public courses in the U.S. by Golf World readers, and many now feature five-star resorts and spas. Beyond the Trail, Alabama offers other standout courses, such as Craft Farms in Gulf Shores, where golfers can enjoy 36 holes on Cotton Creek and Cypress Bend, the only two courses in the state designed by Arnold Palmer.
