Banff National Park's Wildlife

Wildlife is a vital part of the ecosystem in Banff National Park, and spotting animals in their natural habitat is always a highlight. From deer wandering along Banff Avenue to elk grazing beside the scenic Bow Valley Parkway, encounters can happen almost anywhere. The park is home to hundreds of species, including bald eagles and more than 260 bird species, as well as grizzly bears, black bears, moose, wolves, cougars and bighorn sheep.

Visitors are reminded to keep a safe distance and never feed or approach wildlife, as we are guests in their home. Animal sightings vary by season, with bears hibernating in late autumn and returning in spring, while elk are most active during the autumn rut. Throughout the park, specially designed wildlife bridges and tunnels help animals safely cross busy roads, making Banff a global leader in wildlife conservation.

The town of Banff

Banff town offers a choice of accommodation, restaurants, boutique shops and activities to make your trip a memorable one. It is also vibrant, with a lively evening scene should you wish to enjoy drinks and great dining.

The history of this mountain town is also well preserved at a number of museums and heritage sites, while new memories are created throughout the year at world-class festivals and events.

The allure of Banff is also its close proximity to the park’s incredible attractions and best-kept wilderness secrets. With 1600 kilometres of trails, two gondolas, three ski areas, an exciting heritage and more dining options and activities than you have time for, Banff National Park is a premier destination for authentic hospitality and outdoor exploration.

Lake Louise

Lake Louise, in Banff National Park, is famed for its turquoise waters set against towering glacier-clad peaks. About 2.5 km long and 90 m deep, it offers surreal paddling in summer and transforms into one of the world’s most scenic skating rinks in winter. Year-round, it provides picture-perfect scenery and a host of activities for families, nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts.

Originally known to the Stoney First Nation as Lake of the Little Fishes and called Emerald Lake by early European visitors, it was renamed in 1884 in honour of Princess Louise Caroline Alberta. The nearby village offers quaint dining and shopping, just five minutes from the lake. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site for over 125 years, it continues to draw adventurers, art lovers and history buffs. Note: access to Moraine Lake is now by shuttle, Roam public transport, or private tour only, as private vehicles are no longer permitted.
