Epic Idaho Discovery was created to highlight the beautiful scenic byways, vast landscapes, quaint towns, and fun adventures that this Great America West state has to offer. Nez Perce National Historical Park Sites, Hells Gate State Park, Coeur D’Alene, Kootenai National Forest, Grand Teton National Park, Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve and Sawtooth National Forest are just some of the highlights. This fly drive also includes:
PLEASE NOTE: due to the remote locations of some places featured, the accommodation used is below the standard we would normally recommend.
Depart the UK on your chosen scheduled flight to Boise. Upon arrival, transfer independently to Hotel Renegade where you will spend the first two nights.
Boise, Idaho’s Capital City, is as unexpected as it is beautiful. It’s a rare blend of urban and outdoors with hundreds of restaurants, hundreds of miles of trails and a mountain-fed river running through the center of town. Boise is full of unique sites and attractions, and is renowned as a melting pot of culture.
This morning, you collect your rental car and commence your journey of discovery. You’ll be traversing the Payette River Scenic Byway, which as its name suggests hugs the Payette River and offers rafting and kayaking en route. Other options to consider on your journey are Kelly’s Whitewater Park and Tamarack Resort – which offers zip lines and a bike park. The laid back mountain town of McCall is the perfect destination for long days on the shores of Payette Lake. You can rent anything you need within blocks of the lake, including bikes, boats, paddleboards, and inner tubes. You’ll find more beach access, volleyball, and fishing at the nearby Ponderosa State Park, and trails, lakes, and secluded spots throughout the surrounding Payette National Forest. Don’t forget to call at Ice Cream Alley for a sweet treat!
Today you leave McCall and head north, with a final destination of Lewiston. Just a few miles into your journey you will find Hells Gate State Park, where kayaking and jet boat tours are the hottest pursuits. For around the last half of your journey, you’ll be taking the Northwest Passage Scenic Byway, which takes you past the Wolf Education and Research Center and Nez Perce National Historical Park Sites. From Lewiston, you can Moscow Farmers Market and Moscow Craft Breweries, before relaxing for dinner. Perhaps try KC’s Burgers & Brews in Lewiston for a hearty dining experience.
Today we continue journeying north, to the Coeur d’Arlene region, where you are based for the next two nights. There is lots to see and do en route, and once you arrive in the region, in addition to further opportunities from being based on a ranch. You follow the White Pine Scenic Byway for around 100 miles, before arriving into Coeur d’Alene itself. Take a cruise on Coeur d’Alene Lake or try parasailing. The area also offers hiking on North Idaho Centennial Trail, and a biking route around Hiawatha Rail Trail. Once in Sandpoint, you’ve many options to consider. Head to Bonners Ferry and explore Kootenai National Wildlife Refuge or activities on Kootenay River. Stay close by at Lake Pend Orielle, which offers leisure cruises. Take the short trip to Schweitzer Mountain Resort for horseback riding and huckleberry picking, or stay at your overnight ranch and take part in the activities on offer there.
It’s the longest drive today, but the landscape more than makes up for it with Kootenai National Forest on one side and Idaho Panhandle National Forests on the other. Most of todays journey is through Montana, with the final section being on Salmon River Scenic Byway. Once in Salmon, visit Sacajawea Interpretive and Cultural Centre and Goldbug Hot Springs. The Middle Fork of the Salmon River is renowned as one of the top river rafting trips in the world, so give it a try on one of the full or half day options. Perhaps enjoy Bertram’s Salmon River Brewery this evening for a bite to eat and to taste the local ale?
Following the Sacajawea Historic Byway, you’ll pass Lemhi and Terreton before arriving in Victor. This is your base for three nights as you have lots to explore. Within the area you can visit Mesa Falls, go backcountry horse riding, take atrail ride at Linn Canyon Ranch, discover Caribou-Targhee National Forest and follow the Victor to Driggs Rail Trail. Sitting on Wyomings border, from Victor you are just a hop away from the delights of the Grand Tetons, Yellowstone National Park and Jackson Hole. Your base is a ranch, where lots of activities are also available.
After following the Teton Scenic Byway for a few miles, you may choose to go wildlife watching along the Snake River. Next on the list are visits to the Museum of Idaho, Museum of Clean, Shoshone Bannock Tribal Museum, and the renowned Idaho Potato Museum! Why not break for linch in the quaint town of Pocatello?
Skating the base of the Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve, on your journey to Twin Falls, you should stop at Massacre Rocks State Park and take a look at Shoshone Falls – both big draws to the area. Should time allow, City of Rocks National Reserve and neighbouring Castle Rocks, an hour south of Burley, are a great way of spending time. Once known as a stopping point along the California Trail, they get their name from the large rock formations, which today allow for many recreational possibilities.
Todays ‘must see’ is Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve, which you reach after traversing the Sawtooth Scenic Byway. Craters of the Moon is a vast ocean of lava flows with scattered islands of cinder cones and sagebrush. You’ll know you’re close as the surrounding desert landscape changes starts to change around you into black hardened lava rock. Temperatures vary throughout the year- reaching sweltering levels in the summer and dipping below freezing in the winter. In 2017 the monument was designated an International Dark Sky Park for its outstanding night skies and low light pollution. The next day, discover the Sawtooth National Recreation Area, consisting of over 700 miles of trail, 40 peaks rising over 10,000 feet and over 300 high mountain alpine lakes! It is ideal for outdoor recreation and adventure.
You are traversing more of Sawtooth today, heading north toward Stanley, where Redfish Lake signifies you have arrived. Why not call at Stanley Baking Company for a spot of lunch before continuing your journey? Ponderosa Pine Scenic Byway, Wildlife Canyon Scenic Byway and Payette River Scenic Byway create your path from Stanley to Boise. En route visit Kirkham Hot Springs and perhaps try ziplining at Horseshoe Bend.
There may be time for some last minute sightseeing, before making the journey back to Boise Airport for your return flight to the UK.
