Accommodation

Departing from the city of Minneapolis, today’s journey takes you across state lines into South Dakota as you make your way to Sioux Falls, your base for the next two nights. Along the route, consider stopping at the Washington Pavilion, a vibrant cultural centre where science, art, and live performance converge.

With two full days to explore Sioux Falls, be sure to visit Falls Park, where a scenic waterfall adds natural splendour to the urban landscape. Take in panoramic views from the five-story observation tower before enjoying a meal at the Falls Overlook Café. In downtown Sioux Falls, SculptureWalk features 55 distinctive and rotating sculptures displayed in a vibrant outdoor setting, complemented by the Arc of Dreams—a striking architectural installation that spans the Big Sioux River.

Accommodation

The next stop on this beautiful itinerary is Chamberlain. As you head west, be sure to visit the world’s only Corn Palace in Mitchell, a truly unique attraction, redecorated each year with corn, grains, and grasses to showcase a new and imaginative theme.

In Chamberlain, don’t miss the Dignity of Earth & Sky sculpture. Towering 50 feet high on a bluff overlooking the Missouri River, this striking work by sculptor Dale Lamphere honours the Native nations of the Great Plains, blending powerful artistry with deep cultural significance.

Today, you’ll continue west toward Rapid City on a journey filled with stunning landscapes, rich history, and quirky roadside attractions. Before arriving in Rapid City, consider visiting Badlands National Park, where the Badlands Loop Scenic Byway offers breathtaking views of colour-shifting canyons, jagged pinnacles, and dramatic spires.

Just outside the park, stop at the iconic Wall Drug Store. With an eclectic mix of souvenir shops, photo ops, and a classic diner, it’s a perfect place to take a break and grab a bite. The evening is yours to explore Rapid City at your leisure. Consider taking a stroll through the downtown area to admire the life-size bronze statues of U.S. presidents.

Accommodation

After a hearty breakfast in Rapid City, you will set out toward Custer, with the option to travel along the iconic Needles Highway. This renowned route is famous for its narrow tunnels framed by towering granite spires known as “needles.”

Upon arrival in Custer, there is much to explore. A highlight is Custer State Park, renowned for its expansive landscapes, scenic drives such as the Wildlife Loop, and opportunities to observe bison herds, pronghorns, and other wildlife roaming freely. Alternatively, you can visit the Crazy Horse Memorial, which features a monumental sculpture in progress honouring the Oglala Lakota warrior, along with a museum dedicated to Native American culture and history.

If time permits, a visit to Wind Cave National Park is highly recommended. The park is home to one of the world’s longest and most complex cave systems, famed for its remarkable boxwork formation.

Accommodation

The journey from Custer to Deadwood offers a mix of thrilling attractions and rich history. Along the way, consider stopping at Rush Mountain Adventure Park, where you can explore caves, ride a mountain coaster, or experience panoramic views from the summit.

On arrival in Deadwood, you’ll discover a town rich in Wild West history, making it an ideal base for planning a visit to the iconic Mount Rushmore. While in town, take a ride on the historic 1880 Train for a scenic journey through the Black Hills, and explore the Days of ’76 Museum to learn about the region’s frontier heritage. Be sure to stop by Saloon #10, renowned for its Old West charm and lively atmosphere, and tour the Broken Boot Gold Mine for an authentic glimpse into the area’s gold mining past.

Your next stop is Spearfish, a charming town that offers a harmonious blend of natural beauty and cultural experiences. Begin your visit with Bear Butte State Park, located just east of Spearfish. This sacred site for Native American tribes features a 1.8-mile trail leading to the summit of Bear Butte, where you can enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.

After exploring Bear Butte, take the Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway, a 19-mile route celebrated for its towering limestone cliffs, vibrant fall foliage, and several picturesque waterfalls, including Bridal Veil Falls, Roughlock Falls, and Spearfish Falls. This scenic drive is a favourite among photographers and nature enthusiasts alike. In the evening, consider dining at one of Spearfish’s local restaurants, which offer a diverse range of cuisines to satisfy every palate.

Today, you will cross into North Dakota and arrive in the town of Medora, your base for the next two nights. Situated near Theodore Roosevelt National Park, Medora provides an ideal starting point to explore the park’s dramatic badlands, abundant wildlife, and scenic trails. In town, immerse yourself in the local culture with a visit to the North Dakota Cowboy Hall of Fame, which honours the state’s cowboy and Native American heritage, and tour the historic Chateau de Mores, the former home of Medora’s founder.

Evenings in Medora come alive with the Medora Musical, a vibrant performance featuring singing, dancing, and live music at the Burning Hills Amphitheatre. Alternatively, or additionally, you can experience the unique Pitchfork Steak Fondue, where 12-ounce steaks are cooked on pitchforks over hot oil and served with hearty sides.

Accommodation

Minot is the next stop on this incredible journey. Minot offers a delightful mix of history, culture, and aviation heritage. Kick off your visit at the Dakota Territory Air Museum, located just north of the airport. Founded in 1986, this museum preserves aviation history through an impressive collection of vintage military and civilian aircraft, including WWII warbirds.

Next, explore Minot’s unique cultural tribute at the Scandinavian Heritage Park, a 14-acre outdoor museum celebrating Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. Highlights include a replica Stave Church, a 240‑year‑old Norwegian log house, a Finnish sauna, a Danish windmill, and towering statues. If time allows, visit the Pioneer Museum, where local artefacts trace the region’s settlement history, adding context to the area’s early European and Native American roots.

The park also features miles of scenic trails, perfect for hiking, biking, or horseback riding, making it a rewarding stop for both history enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.

Today, you’ll travel east to Fargo for your penultimate stop—a two-night stay in this lively city with quirky charm and surprising cultural depth. Upon arrival, settle into your accommodations and head downtown to explore. Spend your first evening browsing unique shops along Broadway, taking in the vintage atmosphere of the iconic Fargo Theatre, and sampling the local dining scene at one of the city’s inviting eateries.

On your full day in Fargo, begin with a visit to the Plains Art Museum, known for its contemporary and regional exhibitions. If travelling with family or looking for something interactive, the Red River Zoo offers a chance to see rare cold-climate animals in a beautifully landscaped setting. Wrap up your stay with dinner at one of Fargo’s farm-to-table restaurants or enjoy live music at a cosy downtown venue.
