Heading south today, your drive is short but beautiful scenery accompanies your journey. We suggest you take the route via Carcross, where First Nations culture invite you to experience their heritage. Stand in the presence of totem poles, and then tuck inside a carving shed to watch and learn the significance of the artwork’s shapes and colours. Get a coffee and snack at Carcross Commons and wander down to Bennett Lake’s sandy beaches. This glacial lake was once busy with gold seekers struggling their way to the Klondike. Today, it’s busy with people enjoying the sand. Carcross is also the end point of the White Pass & Yukon Route railway, which is definitely worth a visit or maybe even include a journey.  Once you at Tagish Lake, you can relax and enjoy the vistas of Southern Lakes Resort which is located on the shoreline. There are a plethora of activities for you to enjoy during the warmer months, including kayaking, hiking and mountain biking.

Following a hearty breakfast, today you head north to Carmacks. Re-trace your route through Whitehorse and follow the Klondike Highway until you reach the confluence of the Nordenskiold and Yukon Rivers in Carmacks. This is a small town known for its gold rush history and as the ancestral homelands of the Ts’awlnjik Dan First Nation. The boardwalk by the water has interpretive signs on the area’s interesting history and culture. Just north of the Yukon River bridge, the Tagé Cho Hudän Interpretive Centre has fascinating artifacts and examples of the local First Nation heritage, including a dugout canoe and a moose skin boat.

Today your journey continues north. Initially, your journey hugs the Yukon River, before skirting Pelly Crossing, McArthur and Stewart Crossin, making for a very pretty four hour journey with lots of stopping opportunities en route. Your route picks up the infamous Silver Trail. Officially Highway 11, the more colourful name is a nod to the area’s silver mining boom – a lesser-known era than the Klondike gold rush. Winding from the Stewart River Bridge through the Traditional Territory of the Na-Cho Nyäk Dun First Nation, the paved road ends at Mayo with an unpaved loop past Elsa and Keno. Just barely topping 500 year-round residents, this region is largely undeveloped, so there’s plenty of elbow room. Enjoy a tucked-away arts scene, tune into marmots whistling about your arrival, paddle a historic river or log some miles on your mountain bike. Just be sure to give the right of way to any majestic moose or impressive mammals that may cross your path.
