As the name suggests, this holiday takes in three of Oregon’s most treasured pursuits, plus a stay in the big city. Enjoy the vibrancy of Portland, taste the wines of Willamette Valley, dip your toes in Oregon’s coastal waters and get active in Mt. Hood on this fabulous itinerary. This fly drive includes:

  • Return scheduled flights
  • Intermediate 4 door car hire including insurances, for six days (pick up when leaving Portland)
  • Accommodations as stated

Itinerary

Depart the UK on your chosen scheduled flight to Portland. Upon arrival, proceed to the The Nines, a prestigous hotel located in the centre of downtown, surrounded by a wide selection of restaurants, bars and entertainment.

Accommodation

From your central location, the many attractions of Portland are right on your doorstep. This is a wonderfully walkable city, however there is also a very strong bike culture. Perhaps take a bike tour down to the waterfront or to see the city’s many attractions, before savouring dinner and sampling a beverage from one of Oregon’s urban wineries or one of the 50 craft breweries. If you are joyed by the outdoors, visit one of the many gardens; Washington Park, International Rose Test Garden, Forest Park, Portland Japanese Garden or Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden. If attractions and museums are more your ruse, visit Oregon Zoo, Portland Art Museum, Oregon Historical Centre, Oregon Museum of Science and History or Pittock Mansion.

Accommodation

This morning collect your rental car. It is a short but wonderfully pretty drive out of the city and into the wild terrain for which Oregon is primarily known. Driving east you arrive at the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area, where verdant mountain-sides and waterfalls meet the Columbia River, one of the west’s largest rivers flowing into the Pacific Ocean. The area is filled with scenic hiking trails, picnic spots and viewpoints to discover. Thirty miles south of the Columbia River, Mt Hood at 3,428 meters boasts five ski areas and is the most visited snow-covered peak in America. Why not take a visit to Timberline Lodge to enjoy a hot chocolate on the patio overlooking the wonderful scenery? Don’t miss the galleries, restaurants and breweries in Hood River’s historic downtown. Your accommodation is located in the small town of Welches, close to Mt Hood. The resort offers a golf course, a spa, tennis courts and an outdoor pool, with access to bountiful outdoor opportunities including hiking and mountain biking trails, river rafting, fly-fishing, skiing and snowboarding.

Accommodation

It is such a short drive to Willamette Valley that we would suggest taking a longer loop route. You may choose to visit the John Day Fossil Beds, a three site paleontology site where fossils such as mollusks, which lived on what was a beach 100 million years ago, are found in abundance. The Painted Hills site showcases barren hillsides which looked brushed in hues of reds and yellows, creating a dramatic vista. Here you can take one of the five short hiking trails. Smith Rock State Park is a great place for outdoor enthusiasts. Those not brave enough to clib the rocks can take a short meander around the base of the 800ft cliffs. Once in Willamette Valley, you’ll see the scenery change to rolling vineyards and food-to-table farmlands. Oregon’s wine industry has moved from unknown to world-renowned. Award-winning pinot noirs placed Oregon on the global wine map, but the diverse geo-climate has enabled both warm and cool weather varieties to thrive. There are now 17 winegrowing regions within Oregon’s state lines. The naturally welcoming trait of the Oregonians ensures tours and tastings at the plentiful wineries are more reflective of drinking with friends than a sightseeing tour

Accommodation

Once again the drive to your next base is short, but wonderfully scenic as you join the coastal route and head south past pretty coves and fishing villages. From your base in Gleneden Beach there are many places to explore. Before checking in, we suggest visiting Newport; a small town with a big personality. Newport offers a scenic waterfront where many small galleries, gift shops and cafes can be found and from where many boat tours depart. The dock is also home to a noisy sea lion population. Also visit Yaquina Head Lighthouse, standing 93 feet tall at the westernmost point of the basalt headland. This lighthouse has been guiding ships along the west coast since 1873. On your second day, why not visit Florence – gateway to the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area; a 50 acre expanse of oceanfront sand dunes. The southern half is open to off-highway vehicles – including dune buggies – so why not give it a try? The northern half is reserved for wildlife which makes it a wonderful hiking opportunity. Please note, alternatively you may choose to stay in Florence at Driftwood Shores Resort.

Sightseeing in Florence

Accommodation

You may choose to venture inland en route back to Portland International Airport, visiting Eugene and Salem. Once back at the airport, return your car to the depot and check in for your flight back to the UK.
