If you are looking for sweeping beauty, iconic lighthouses and quaint seaside towns then this is the perfect itinerary for you. Following a stay in vibrant Portland, relax with stays in the coastal towns of Cannon Beach and Florence.
This fly drive includes:
Depart the UK on your chosen scheduled flight to Portland. Upon arrival, collect your rental car and proceed to the Royal Sonesta Portland, where you will be based for the first three nights.
The question isn’t what to do in Portland, but where to start! A great way to familiarise yourself with the city is on a Segway or Bike. You may even choose to take the bike tour which includes a sampling at one of Portland’s brew pubs. Visit Pioneer Square, filled with great shopping and a host of attractions, then meander some of the quaint squares which dot the area, relaxing with a coffee en route. Portland is renowned for its food trucks – they are a local phenomenon, serving delectable cuisine from across the globe.
It is only a short drive today as you leave the city and head for the beautiful coast. We suggest taking the northern loop road which passes through Astoria. Make a stop in the carnival town of Seaside, where surf shops, oceanfront boardwalks and ice creams are commonplace. Once in Cannon Beach, visit Haystack Rock, perhaps once of the most iconic images of Oregon’s coastline.
Heading south, your journey continues along the coastline which is dotted with scenic lookout points and quaint small towns and villages. There are numerous stops you shouldn’t miss. Visit Depoe Bay Sea Wall, where crashing waves pummel the coastline on one side of Highway 101 whilst over 20 shops and restaurants line the other side. Also visit Yaquina Head Lighthouse, standing 93 feet tall at the westernmost point of the basalt headland. This lighthouse has been guiding ships along the west coast since 1873. Newport offers a scenic waterfront where many small galleries, gift shops and cafes can be found and from where many boat tours depart. The dock is also home to a noisy sea lion population.
Rather than following the same coastal route back to Portland, we suggest driving inland to Eugene and venturing north via Willamette Valley. If time allows, why not try a tasting at one of over 200 vineyards? On arrival at Portland Airport, return your car to the depot and check in for your flight back to the UK.
