On this action-packed holiday, you’ll primarily explore Kentucky’s renowned equestrian heritage, whilst also looking at the state’s history, music culture and its incredible range of bourbon distilleries. It makes a great choice for a diverse journey. This fly drive includes:
Depart the UK on your chosen scheduled flight to Louisville, Kentucky. Upon arrival, collect your rental car and proceed to your hotel.
Louisville is renowned for the annual Kentucky Derby. Horse racing enthusiasts will enjoy the Kentucky Derby Museum, offering a hands-on experience. Once in downtown, visit the Slugger Museum and Factory, take a river cruise on the Belle of Louisville or follow the Urban Bourbon Trail.
Located in the rolling green hills of central Kentucky’s Bluegrass Country, Bardstown is an old-world town that is home to the state’s finest bourbon distilleries. Take a tour of the Heaven Hill Distillery and stop by the Bourbon Heritage Center to learn about its intriguing history. Explore Federal Hill at My Old Kentucky Home State Park– the plantation that inspired the song ‘My Old Kentucky Home’, which is now the state song. There are several dining options but we recommend the My Old Kentucky Dinner Train – a two hour excursion through the countryside.
A full-scale replica fort in Old Fort Harrod State Park commemorates the first permanent settlement west of the Allegheny Mountains. Providing an up-close view of one of the most unique ecosystems in the country, the geologically ancient Kentucky River Palisades, is the authentic 115-passenger Dixie Belle sternwheeler. There are horseback riding trails, backroads and byways for bicycle enthusiasts, and outdoor water sports ranging from kayaking to skiing.
With quaint Southern charm, a quirky arts scene, friendly people and a picturesque setting Lexington has a lot to offer. Once in Lexington, the horse capital of the world, you can enjoy a true equine experience at Kentucky Horse Park. In Lexington’s Bluegrass Region, there are hundreds of exciting things to do, see and experience. Celebrate the living history of Kentucky Bourbon at nearby distilleries such as The Woodford Reserve Distillery, Buffalo Trace, Four Rose, Wild Turkey, James E. Pepper and Town Branch.
Frankfort is one of the smallest state capitals in America, but full of history. Be sure to explore the Capitol Grounds and the Kentucky History Centre with hands-on activities, interactive exhibits and dynamic collections before a spot of lunch in one of the many downtown eateries. On your way to Frankfort why not visit Midway, a small historic city located between Lexington and Frankfort and a perfect example of small-town southern charm. Here you will find unique shops and good restaurant options.
On your return to Louisville, we would suggest that your first port of call is The Muhammed Ali Center, which has majestic views od Kentucky’s largest city. For lunch, you may like to enjoy freshly smoked BBQ and delicious sides at Fred’s Smokehouse, named after 7th generation Master Distiller Fred Noe. Finally for your last few hours in Louisville why not finish with a Bourbon-themed dinner at Bourbons Bistro, Louisville’s foremost Bourbon bar, located in the historic Clifton district.
Today take the short drive back to Louisville International Airport, before returning your rental car and check-in for your flight to the UK.
