A journey exploring the diverse attractions of three locations in the Capital Region. Firstly, discover the iconic monuments, acclaimed museums, and spectacular dining options of Washington, DC. Next, this adventure takes you to Charlottesville in Virginia, a quaint college town, filled with history and surrounded by world-class vineyards. Finally, cross into Maryland, where friendly Baltimore boasts a waterfront setting, a range of neighborhoods each with their own unique character and a divine assortment of attractions and entertainment. This holiday itinerary includes:
Depart the UK on your chosen scheduled flight to Washington Dulles International Airport. Upon arrival, transfer independently to the Fairmont, located in the Georgetown district. Here quaint boutiques, galleries and cafes are reminiscent of a small town rather than a large city, yet the iconic attractions of the capital city are only a short distance away.
We’ve allowed two full days for you to experience this vibrant and historical city. We suggest visits to the Jefferson and Lincoln Memorials, the Smithsonian’s many museums, The Spy Museum, Arlington Cemetery, the Capitol Building and, of course, the White House, which is a must on any visit. If time allows, discover the city’s eclectic neighbourhoods, boutique and designer shopping, live music venues showcasing rock, jazz, R&B and reggae, sensational theatre productions and array of delicious eateries.
Just two hours south of Washington D.C, along the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Charlottesville is steeped in presidential history and offers a unique experience in a picturesque setting. Visitors are eager to see Thomas Jefferson’s home at Monticello and his lasting academic legacy at the University of Virginia. The famous UNESCO World Heritage site is an architectural masterpiece. Outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy kayaking the James or Rivanna, hiking miles of wilderness trails or peddling miles of bike trails and quiet country roads. Visitors love the orchards along those roads, overflowing with strawberries, cherries, peaches, apples and of course grapes. Many choose to enjoy a tour and tasting at one of more than 20 vineyards along the Monticello Wine Trail.
Next up, you cross the state border into Maryland, to discover Baltimore – also known as Charm City. You’ll soon see why, when you explore its historic places, pretty waterfront, family-friendly attractions and fabulous neighbourhoods. Inner Harbor with its picturesque marina, is Baltimore’s thriving downtown area and where you’ll find iconic attractions like the National Aquarium, USS Constellation, and Harborplace shopping complex. Located just north of downtown, Mount Vernon is a culturally rich neighbourhood with grand mansions and elegant townhouses. Home to the Washington Monument, which provides panoramic views of the city, Mount Vernon boasts several notable institutions, including the Walters Art Museum and the Peabody Institute. Fell’s Point meanwhile is a historic waterfront neighbourhood with Belgian block streets and preserved 18th-century architecture. It offers a unique charm and a vibrant nightlife scene with a wide selection of bars and live music venues.
You may have time for some last-minute sightseeing or all-important souvenir shopping, before making the short journey to Washington Dulles International Airport, returning your rental car and checking in for your flight back to the UK.
