Accommodation

137 Miles / 220 Kilometres

Pick up your motorhome from one of Cruise America’s New York locations and journey around Long Island Sound before heading northeast to your first overnight stop. Along the way, visit the Barnum Museum in Bridgeport, dedicated to the flamboyant circus pioneer who once served as the city’s mayor.

106 Miles / 171 Kilometres

Traveling down the scenic eastern shore of the Thames brings you to Mystic Seaport, a historic whaling port and shipyard for fast clippers, now a living outdoor museum showcasing old ships and New England life from two hundred years ago. Continue to Newport, Rhode Island, where the grand summer mansions of the Vanderbilts and others provided the backdrop for F. Scott Fitzgerald’s—and Robert Redford’s—The Great Gatsby.

15 Miles / 24 Kilometres

A loop to visit the Kennedy family’s Hyannis is a great detour before heading north to Plymouth, where the Mayflower brought the Pilgrims in 1620. Just south of town, Plimoth Plantation offers a detailed recreation of the Pilgrims’ 1627 village and way of life. Don’t miss Plymouth Rock, the legendary, though perhaps apocryphal, site where the Pilgrims first set foot on what would become America.

92 Miles / 148 Kilometres

Head north, bypassing the city of Boston, with a stop in Lexington, where the first skirmish of the Revolutionary War took place and Paul Revere famously roused Sam Adams and John Hancock. Another intriguing detour is North Salem in New Hampshire, home to America’s own 4,000-year-old Stonehenge. Make sure to visit Salem, Massachusetts, known for the infamous witchcraft trials of 1692.

268 Miles / 431 Kilometres

Briefly returning to New Hampshire, the journey continues into Maine along the dramatic and scenic Atlantic coastline, with Bar Harbor on Mount Desert Island as the destination. Surrounded by the cliffs and seascapes of Acadia National Park, you can visit the Abbe Museum at Sieur de Monts Spring and take a ferry to explore Little Cranberry Island.

157 Miles / 253 Kilometres

Heading inland to Maine’s capital, Bangor, the journey continues into the state’s picturesque interior, arriving at Blue Mountain State Park. The area is home to moose, red squirrels, and the more elusive black bear and coyote. Visit the scenic Webb Beach and nearby Centre Hill, while children can enjoy the park’s Nature Centre.

99 Miles / 159 Kilometres

Crossing back into New Hampshire, the mountains rise dramatically, with many peaks reaching 4,000 to 5,000 feet and Mount Washington, at 6,288 feet, dominating the White Mountain National Forest. From here, you can take the 1869 coal-fired cog railway to the summit of Mount Washington and enjoy fine French dining in the charming town of Bethlehem.

129 Miles / 208 Kilometres

Soon after crossing into Vermont, you’ll approach the year round resort surrounding Killington Peak. There’s a lot to see and do here before moving on to the suggested overnight campsite. Opt for one of the campsites in one of the state parks such as Gifford Woods or Ricker Pond State Park. Visit: world famous Dartmouth College on your way through Hanover.

57 Miles / 92 Kilometres

Few artists captured the golden age of Americana as memorably as Norman Rockwell. Many of the covers he created for the Saturday Evening Post in the 1940s and 50s were painted at his home in Arlington, Vermont, which is now The Inn on Covered Bridge Green. Be sure to visit the Norman Rockwell Exhibition to see his iconic work up close.

78 Miles / 126 Kilometres

Your route continues into New York State, following the Hudson River south to Hyde Park, the birthplace and home of Franklin D. Roosevelt, where both he and Eleanor Roosevelt are also buried. For lunch, consider visiting the Culinary Institute of America, which offers four gourmet restaurants by reservation. Don’t miss the opportunity to explore the homes of both FDR and Eleanor in Hyde Park

137 Miles / 220 Kilometres

Allow a good two hours to get back to the Cruise America depot in New York, especially if driving in rush hour. Return your motorhome, make your way to the airport and check in for your flight back to the UK.
