Accommodation

131 Miles / 211 Kilometres

Collect your motorhome from Cruise America’s Los Angeles station and travel 132 miles to Barstow for an overnight stop. This crossroads town once played an important role in history, with the Old Spanish Trail passing through the area. Today, many visitors are drawn by the two large outlet malls, home to around one hundred stores. While here, take a shuttle trip to the nearby silver mining ghost town of Calico for a fascinating glimpse into the region’s past.

156 Miles / 251 Kilometres

A drive of around two hours skirting the Mojave Desert brings you to Las Vegas, a city of neon lights, megastars, and world-famous casinos. Spend the day wandering along the Strip, soaking up the atmosphere, and decide which show to see in the evening. Tickets are usually easy to find, with several Cirque du Soleil performances running in different hotels, any one of them is a fantastic choice. Be sure to explore iconic landmarks inspired by New York, Paris, Mandalay Bay, Luxor, the Barbary Coast, and the Sahara, all lining the dazzling Las Vegas Strip.

32 Miles / 51 Kilometres

Today you cross into Arizona via the iconic Hoover Dam, an extraordinary man-made structure that channels the mighty Colorado River through turbines at around eighty-five miles an hour, generating power for much of the region. There is plenty to see and explore here, including the museum, which reveals how this colossal and costly feat of engineering was constructed. Continue on to Kingman, the gateway to historic Route 66, and stop at the Powerhouse Visitors’ Center to pick up a map for the Kingman walking tour.

247 Miles / 397 Kilometres

The longest remaining stretch of Route 66 begins in Kingman and winds its way to Ash Fork, passing through the Hualapai Indian Reservation at Peach Springs and skirting tantalisingly close to the Grand Canyon, even though access isn’t possible from this direction. After getting your kicks along this iconic road, you’ll continue to Williams before heading north to the Grand Canyon itself, where the reward is time spent on the rim as the sun sets and again at first light, when the changing colours and vast scale are at their most memorable.

239 Miles / 385 Kilometres

During just over four hours heading south on Interstate 17, the landscape transforms dramatically—from the lush forests of the north, full of pines and aspens, to the arid deserts of the south, dotted with towering cacti and sagebrush. This striking change makes the journey fascinating in itself, and a stop in Sedona, as you pass through the Coconino Forest, is the perfect way to break up the drive. Continuing on to the eastern edge of Scottsdale, where the Four Peaks rise from the desert floor, you can explore nearby highlights such as Montezuma Castle, one of North America’s best-preserved cliff dwellings, standing five storeys high with twenty rooms.

160 Miles / 257 Kilometres

Unashamedly a stop ‘halfway between where you’ve been and where you want to go,’ Blythe, situated alongside the Colorado River, thrives on welcoming travellers passing through. While here, be sure to visit the Cibola National Wildlife Refuge.

74 Miles / 119 Kilometres

Be sure to stop at Joshua Tree National Park and, if time allows, the Salton Sea State Recreation Area on your way to Palm Springs or, more accurately, its neighbour Palm Desert. This ‘desert drive’ is a fascinating journey to your destination on Frank Sinatra Drive. Emerald Desert is a resort in its own right, complete with a nine-hole golf course for a quick escape. Once there, explore more of Palm Springs and keep an eye out for celebrities, many of whom are drawn to the area for its gentle desert climate.

164 Miles / 264 Kilometres

Next, it’s time to reach the Pacific Ocean and the beach. Heading south, you can enjoy a scenic country drive through Pinion Flats, along the edge of the San Bernardino National Forest, and through the Cleveland National Forest before joining the route into San Diego, or you can take the faster route straight to the coast. Once there, don’t miss a visit to the world-famous Palomar.

4 Miles / 6 Kilometres

Allow a good two hours to get back to the Cruise America depot, especially if driving in rush hour. Return your motorhome, make your way to the airport and check in for your flight back to the UK.
