Stay in one of Newfoundland’s most iconic buildings, Fogo Island Inn – a true architectural masterpiece, as well as the upscale JAG Boutique Hotel in St. John’s. This fly drive includes:
Depart the UK on your chosen scheduled flight to St John’s International Airport. Upon arrival, collect your hire car and transfer independently to the the JAG Boutique Hotel.
Today is yours to explore the charming city of St John’s. Take a drive up Signal Hill for spectacular views and a trip out to Cape Spear National Historic Site, which is the most easterly point in North America. We also suggest a visit to one of the province’s most photographed places, Quidi Vidi Village, and perhaps a stop at Quidi Vidi Brewery.
Leaving the city, embark on a journey into the Bonavista Peninsula. In the small town of Bonavista, visit the Ryan Premises National Historic Site, the red and white striped Bonavista Lighthouse and the Matthew Legacy, a replica of John Cabot’s ship which voyaged across the Atlantic to find land in 1497. Following an overnight in Trinity, spend your day exploring the enchanting village, with its restored pastel coloured clapboard houses. Join the Trinity Pageant, a walking theatre that meanders through the village enticing viewers to live the history of the area.
Today, you will depart Trinity for the afternoon ferry to Fogo Island. With a long maritime history, the largest offshore island of Newfoundland and Labrador is a gentle world of bright-colored clapboard houses, sea-cliff footpaths, lush forest, and warm hospitality set against a striking coastline. Your home for the next two nights is one of the most unique hotels in the world; the Fogo Island Inn. Founded by resident Fogo Islander, Zita Cobb, the Inn is made from materials native to the island and all produce is locally sourced from fellow Islanders. Enjoy an island orientation tour from a local, go berry picking and have the kitchen turn your results into jam or simply kick back in the cinema. The next few days are yours to explore this stunning island and unique hotel.
Take the morning ferry back to the main island of Newfoundland, before continuing your journey back to St John’s. Stop en route at Gander and take in the Aviation Museum, which features displays from the famous Gander Airport, including the time when Gander played host to 6,122 passengers with nowhere to go on September 11th 2001, in one of the more heart warming stories from that day. Once back in St John’s, enjoy a meal on your final night in Newfoundland.
Spend the morning shopping for souvenirs before driving the short distance back to St John’s Airport, ready for your onward journey back to the UK.
