Ma Johnson’s is the only authentic historic hotel in the park. A former boarding house, it brings alive the sensibilities of the past, almost like staying at a living museum! Split between two buildings, Ma Johnson’s Historic Hotel houses 20 extremely basic and rustic guestrooms. Each room is unique and includes period pieces from the town’s heyday, for example the bed frames in each room are the originals. Most have a sink, with shared bathroom facilities across the hall. There are no televisions or electrical outlets in the rooms. The McCarthy Lodge located across the street houses the property’s restaurant and saloon.
Ma Johnson's Historical Hotel is located in McCarthy in Wrangell-St Elias National Park - the largest protected wilderness on earth. When driving to McCarthy, the last town you will pass through is Chitna, and from there you will drive 60 miles on gravel road all the way to Kennicott River. From here you cross the footbridge and call for the hotel shuttle. Alternatively, you can arrive by air on Wrangell Mountain Air, which services between Chitna and McCarthy three times a day.
