San Antonio is one of Texas’s most iconic cities, known for its deep-rooted history, vibrant culture, and dynamic modern appeal. Founded in 1718 as a Spanish mission and colonial outpost, it’s home to some of the most significant historical sites in the state, including The Alamo, where a pivotal battle of the Texas Revolution took place. Today, San Antonio blends its rich heritage with a lively urban scene. The River Walk, a network of walkways along the San Antonio River, is lined with restaurants, shops, and historic landmarks. The city is also known for its Tejano culture, festive events like Fiesta San Antonio, and attractions such as the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park (a UNESCO World Heritage Site).
Just north and west of San Antonio lies the Texas Hill Country, a region known for its rolling limestone hills, spring-fed rivers, and charming small towns. This area is beloved for its natural beauty and slower pace of life, offering a contrast to the city while still being easily accessible. The Hill Country includes towns like Fredericksburg (famous for its German heritage and wineries), Boerne, Wimberley, and Kerrville. It’s a popular destination for wine tasting, hiking, tubing on rivers like the Guadalupe and Comal, and enjoying bluebonnet blooms in spring. The region also hosts numerous music festivals and local artisan markets that highlight the area’s creativity and community spirit.

The Alamo

Located in the heart of downtown San Antonio, The Alamo is one of Texas’ most historic and visited sites. Originally known as Misión San Antonio de Valero, this iconic site, along with San Antonio Missions National Historical Park, is recognized as Texas’ first and only UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Founded in 1718 as the first mission in San Antonio, the Alamo served as a way station between East Texas and Mexico. In 1836, decades after the mission had closed, approximately 200 Texan defenders held the Alamo from over 2,500 of General Santa Anna’s troops from Mexico. For 13 days in 1836, close to 200 Texas defenders held the Alamo from approximately 2,500 of General Santa Anna’s troops from Mexico. The most famous of the defenders, William B. Travis, James Bowie, and David Crockett, died fighting overwhelming odds for freedom. “Remember the Alamo!” became a rallying cry for Texans fighting for independence during the Texas Revolution. Today, visitors are invited to rediscover the gem of Texas history, and stroll through the 4.2-acre complex and Alamo Gardens.

The San Antonio Riverwalk

The San Antonio River Walk, also known as the “Paseo del Rio,” is a stunning 15-mile urban waterway that weaves through the vibrant heart of San Antonio. It is a verdant oasis of cypress-lined paved paths, arched stone bridges, and lush landscapes, which gently winds through the city center, providing easy access to the city’s cultural hot spots and historic sites as well as shops, restaurants, and other attractions. The Riverwalk comes alive at night with many restaurants and bars having seating along the riverside offering you the opportunity to take in the atmosphere.

But whilst the downtown section is famous for its lively restaurants, unique shops, and exciting nightlife, the River Walk offers a diverse range of experiences across its entire length. Enjoy a relaxing boat tour, perfect for sightseeing and learning about the River Walk's history. Visit the San Antonio Museum of Art and other cultural institutions located along the River Walk. Catch a show or performance at one of the many venues in the area. Take one of the many bike trails or hop into a kayak and see the sights from the water.

San Antonio Missions National Historical Park

One of the many great aspects of San Antonio Missions National Historical Park is that though it is a site steeped in history, it is still very much a thriving, active community today. Named the first World Heritage Site in Texas by the United Nations Organization for Education, Science and Culture (UNESCO), it includes the city’s four southernmost Spanish colonial missions – Concepción, San José, San Juan and Espada.

In the 18th century, Spanish priests established Catholic missions along the San Antonio River to serve as the center of an ethnically diverse society. Today, the missions – walled compounds encompassing a church and buildings where the priests and local Native Americans lived – represent the largest concentration of Spanish colonial missions in North America.

Explore the San Antonio Missions along the River Walk’s Mission Reach, an eight-mile stretch with recreational trails, pedestrian bridges, pavilions, and portals
