The John Day Fossil Beds National Monument is a paleontology site where fossils such as mollusks, which lived on what was a beach 100 million years ago, are found in abundance. The monument consists of three separate sites; Sheep Rock, Painted Hills, and Clarno. Visit Sheep Rock for its unique blue-green rock layers, and the Thomas Condon Palaeontology Center, where you can watch the scientists at work. Head west to the Painted Hills where barren hillsides look brushed with eye-catching hues, from ochre and blazing yellow to green.
