As the original gateway to The Wild West, Fort Smith was the last-chance stop between modern civilization and the untamed wilderness of Indian Territory (modern-day Oklahoma) for anyone that desired to travel west. For that reason, people of virtually all world cultures travelled here at some point in time, and many of them would ultimately decide to make the city their new home.
Relive history through stories and re-enactments of outlaws, lawmen, soldiers, and the Trail of Tears. Explore the Natural State at its finest as you journey through the mighty Arkansas River Valley and the majestic Ozark Mountains by train. Watch the sun setting on Indian Territory from atop a vintage Ferris Wheel located downtown. Discover unique exhibits, art galleries, live entertainment, shopping, and more. There are so many ways to Experience Fort Smith.
Each market day is a festival of the senses thanks to more than 90 growers, artisans, and other types of merchants that supply a bountiful cornucopia of fresh produce, flowers, homemade candies, baked goods, canned jams and preserves, high-quality woodturning pieces, gourmet coffees, organic eggs, grass-fed beef and so much more.
The Fort Smith Farmer's Market on Garrison Avenue is open from 7 am to Noon every Wednesday and Saturday from late spring throughout the fall season and on Saturdays from early winter through early spring. The Saturday market is also alive with street performers, local musicians, community organisations, tourists, and locals alike.
Over the course of the last 200 years, Fort Smith's culinary scene has come of age. From Southern-styled fried chicken and catfish, BBQ grills, collard greens, and Cajun specialties to the more exotic cuisines of Mexico, Peru, El Salvador, Greece, Italy, China, Japan, and many others, Fort Smith is the perfect destination for any food lover.
