Going back more than 150 years, Bristol has proudly been known as both a lively place to visit and “A Good Place to Live.” Its main thoroughfare, State Street, is uniquely divided by the state lines of Virginia and Tennessee and is celebrated as the Birthplace of Country Music. It was here in 1927 that talent scout Ralph Peer made the first commercially produced country music recordings – the famous Bristol Sessions – now recognised worldwide as the ‘Big Bang’ of the genre.

Today the state line still runs through the heart of Historic Downtown, where visitors will find a wealth of shopping, dining and entertainment options. Steeped in cultural and musical heritage, the district continues to shape the region’s arts scene, featuring more than 30 artisans across six blocks. While proudly honouring its country music roots, Bristol’s Arts & Entertainment District embraces creativity in all its forms, from the traditional to the wonderfully quirky.

Why Bristol?

Bristol is renowned for NASCAR, home to the iconic Bristol Motor Speedway, which seats over 150,000 fans and hosts Sprint Cup events each April and August, drawing spectators from all 50 states and beyond. Music also puts Bristol on the map, with the city officially recognized as the Birthplace of Country Music by Congress in 1998. The legendary 1927 Bristol Sessions, held downtown, launched modern country music, featuring pioneers like The Carter Family and Jimmie Rodgers.

But Bristol isn’t just about racing and music. Nestled amid the Appalachian Mountains and near South Holston Lake, the area offers abundant outdoor recreation, from boating to hiking. The city features multiple parks, including Steele Creek Park, a 2,100-acre space with trails, paddleboats, a nature centre, and a golf course, and nearby Sugar Hollow Park, which offers walking trails, picnic areas, disc golf, mountain biking, and a sports complex.
