Florence

In historic Florence, explore the trails that will take you on a journey from the birth of the Singing River to the rhythms that fuel the soul of Alabama. Travel also the same ancient paths where the early Native American settlers carved out a thriving community imbued with their mystical culture. The Singing River influence their way of life just as it compelled William Christopher Handy to reproduce the sounds of unique Southern Soul. Stories of overcoming adversity abound throughout Florence, from enduring the battles of the Civil War era to the inspirational accomplishments of Helen Keller.

Muscle Shoals

Have you ever heard of Aretha Franklin, The Rolling Stones, Paul Simon, The Osmond Brothers, or Percy Sledge? This is just a glimpse of the legendary musicians who recorded in Muscle Shoals. FAME Studios, Muscle Shoals Sound, and other studios earned the area the title of Hit Recording Capital of the World in the 1960s, and today, studios across the region continue producing hits and launching artists to fame.

Muscle Shoals’ musical heritage runs deep. W.C. Handy, the Father of the Blues, was born in nearby Florence, as were rock and roll pioneers Sam Phillips and Buddy Killen. The area is still home to acclaimed musicians like John Paul White of The Civil Wars, David Hood of the Swampers, Donnie Fritts, Spooner Oldham, and Donna Jean Godcheax. Live music thrives in local venues, where a famous artist might drop in, or the musician playing at 116 Mobile could be the next big name, carrying on the Muscle Shoals legacy.

Huntsville

Huntsville, established in 1805 by pioneer John Hunt near the Big Spring, played a key role in Alabama’s early history, hosting delegates who drafted the state’s first constitution. The city grew as a cotton trading and transportation hub, and today boasts the South’s largest concentration of antebellum homes.

Huntsville offers attractions for every interest. Space enthusiasts can explore the U.S. Space & Rocket Center, history buffs can visit Burritt on the Mountain, Weeden House, and Alabama Constitution Village, and families can enjoy EarlyWorks Children’s Museum. Art and nature lovers can visit the Huntsville Museum of Art or the Huntsville Botanical Garden, home to the nation’s largest open-air butterfly house.
