Have you ever heard of Aretha Franklin, The Rolling Stones, Paul Simon, The Osmond Brothers, or Percy Sledge? This is just a glimpse of the legendary musicians who recorded in Muscle Shoals. FAME Studios, Muscle Shoals Sound, and other studios earned the area the title of Hit Recording Capital of the World in the 1960s, and today, studios across the region continue producing hits and launching artists to fame.
Muscle Shoals’ musical heritage runs deep. W.C. Handy, the Father of the Blues, was born in nearby Florence, as were rock and roll pioneers Sam Phillips and Buddy Killen. The area is still home to acclaimed musicians like John Paul White of The Civil Wars, David Hood of the Swampers, Donnie Fritts, Spooner Oldham, and Donna Jean Godcheax. Live music thrives in local venues, where a famous artist might drop in, or the musician playing at 116 Mobile could be the next big name, carrying on the Muscle Shoals legacy.
